Environmental Strategies
Irrigation – The water taking for irrigation at Greensmere Golf & Country Club has been designed to minimize the impact to the surrounding natural environment. This innovative solution to water supply limits the golf course’s impact on the natural environment. The water is stored in a series of ponds located on the golf course that are connected to the main irrigation pond. The course does not rely on water taken from natural streams or ponds and groundwater is also not used for irrigation. During wet periods of the year such as following the spring melt or a significant rainfall event, the golf course has been designed to funnel excess water to the on-site pond system for storage. The water levels within the constructed ponds can be controlled, and as necessary, additional water can be released from various ponds to the main irrigation pond for use during irrigation.
The water stored within the on-site ponds is the only source of irrigation water for the golf course. Following the design of the water taking system, Greensmere had groundwater and surface water studies completed to ensure the proposed water taking would not have an adverse impact on surrounding water users and the natural environment.
Greensmere Golf & Country Club has achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP) Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification is awarded to golf courses designed and maintained according to Audubon International’s precise planning standards and environmental disciplines.
Audubon International is an environmental organization whose mission is to improve the environment through research, education and conservation.
